DANGER – HSUS forms Breeders Resource and Advisory Council

Posted in AKC, On the National Front, Pet Laws, What is HSUS? at 12:53 am by Administrator

Please consider sending this to AKC.  Dog breeding is in danger.  Edit as necessary.  Send to lxp@akc.org.

“Recently the Humane Society of the United States announced the formation of its Dog Breeders Advisory Council.  This council is purportedly comprised of “responsible breeders” and was formed to work with the HSUS to help the public to identify responsible breeders and to avoid supporting puppy mills. Additionally, members provide input and advice on public policy decisions.

I (we) urge AKC to employ immediate action to counteract this latest HSUS tactic that is clearly directed at eliminating hobby breeders.  This very alarming move by the HSUS has the imminent potential to narrow the public’s perception of a responsible breeder to a very prejudicial, HSUS-controlled definition.  It further opens the door of opportunity for HSUS to include in new proposed legislation such constraints as the issuance of “breeding licenses” only to HSUS-approved breeders.

It is imperative that HSUS not be considered by the public as experts on the intricacies of raising the purebred dog.  I (we) respectfully request that AKC take immediate action to counteract this new threat to the art, science, and constitutional right to breed dogs.”

A dog breeder’s naivete…and what you should know about HSUS

Posted in Animal Activists, Animal Ownership, On the National Front, Pet Laws, What is HSUS? at 7:58 pm by Administrator

It’s been more than a decade since I brought my first Elkhound home.  I wanted a dog.  I wanted a dog to bond with, to play with, to be a companion, to love.  As time progressed, I became enamored with doing obedience, rally, agility, and got involved in conformation.

I was very naïve.  I bought a show dog, and then another.  I decided I wanted to be a breeder.  I didn’t know then that “breeder” was a dirty word.  I wanted other people to enjoy this breed.  I wanted a hobby that I could grow old with, and that would keep me young.  I wanted many things, but I did not anticipate becoming, in the public’s eye, a “criminal.”

If someone would have told me, more than a decade ago, that I would be spending hours and hours fighting anti-dog, anti-breeder legislation at the local, state, and federal levels, I would have laughed in their face. Had I known that I might be subject to harassment, the threat of unannounced inspections of my very home, be faced with ever-increasing licensing fees, been faced with legislation that might include bank references and criminal background checks just to enjoy my hobby, I might never have entered the dog world.

No hobby that I know of has been subject to the harassment that dog breeders have.  I know of no other hobby where one must be looking over their shoulder at all times, worried that they might be violating a law simply because a dog’s nails might be longer than what subjective laws might consider long, or for having a piece of tartar on an old dog’s tooth.  I never in the world would have thought that my dogs’ veterinary care might be subject to legislation.  I didn’t anticipate having to dot my I’s and cross my t’s when it came to recording my dogs’ expenses.  And never in the world did I ever believe that fingers would be pointed or that “breeder” would become a dirty word.

Where did this all start?  Well, after more than a decade of research and experience, most of this harassment has been initiated by the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS).  HSUS has, through its lobbying efforts and its misleading advertising, been trying to criminalize dog, cat, rabbit, hamster, bunny – you name it – breeding for decades.  And the rigid legislation that HSUS helps to write has one chilling effect – to eliminate the home hobby breeder.

I’m a “to each his own” kind of person.  Personally, I like dogs.  And cats.  And bunnies.  I also like to eat meat, dress in cotton, and wear leather shoes.  If someone else doesn’t like that – such as HSUS and PETA – well, that’s ok with me, but leave me alone to make my choices.  HSUS has sunk its talons into the home hobby breeders, and they are going after agriculture – part of our great country’s very existence.

HSUS is in direct violation of the Federal Lobbying Disclosure Act of 1995.  Of it’s $19 per month donation, only 1 percent of that goes to direct help for animals.  The rest of its vast assets are tied up in lobbying efforts, padding its own pension plans, and disproportionate salaries for its executive staff.  This corporate bigot must be stopped before we all lose our rights…to breed companion animals, to eat the food we enjoy, and to keep the Government out of our homes.

Please join me in petitioning the White House to investigate HSUS for noncompliance with the Lobbying Disclosure Act of 1995 by logging on to https://wwws.whitehouse.gov/petitions#!/petition/investigate-humane-society-united-states-non-compliance-lobbying-disclosure-act-1995/42RtSR6W.

Every vote helps.

Exploring Our Connection With Pets

April 6, 2011 | By Amy Lieberman | Category: Adoption & Rescue | 2 comments

A new book celebrates “The Bond” between people and animals.

As far as Wayne Pacelle can remember, back to his early days of
childhood, he has felt instinctively passionate about and connected to
animals.

“The passion I felt just wasn’t for the dogs in our home. It manifested
itself in other ways, such as drawing pictures of animals and dog-earing
all of our encyclopedias to the pages that had mammals and birds as
entries,” said Pacelle, the president and CEO of the Humane Society of
the United States, the country’s largest animal protection organization.

“I was just very alert to animals and their needs. I knew it was wrong
to harm animals before anyone provided that kind of moral guidance.”…….

This is a bit different than the quotes we have from Pacelle such as:

“I don’t have a hands-on fondness for animals…To this day I don’t feel
bonded to any non-human animal. I like them and I pet them and I’m kind
to them, but there’s no special bond between me and other animals.”
Wayne Pacelle quoted in Bloodties: Nature, Culture and the Hunt by Ted
Kerasote, 1993, p. 251, before joining the HSUS.

Preserving our pets – don’t listen to the AR’s

Posted in Animal Activists, Animal Ownership, Miscellany, On the National Front, What is HSUS? at 12:07 am by Administrator

In 2010, more than half the US population (62%, or 71 million households) owned at least one pet, and the US population spent almost 48 billion dollars on pet care.

Most pet owners in the US have heard of HSUS, PeTA, and other animal organizations. Their names are household words.  But are they pet-friendly? Here are some quotes from our animal rights organizations:

My goal is the abolition of all animal agriculture. — J.P. Goodwin while executive director of the Coalition Against the Fur Trade (As quoted on AR-Views, an animal rights Internet discussion group).

It is time we demand an end to the misguided and abusive concept of animal ownership. The first step on this long, but just, road would be ending the concept of pet ownership. — Elliot Katz, President, In Defense of Animals, “In Defense of Animals,” Spring 1997.

Liberating our language by eliminating the word ‘pet’ is the first step … In an ideal society where all exploitation and oppression has been eliminated, it will be NJARA’s policy to oppose the keeping of animals as ‘pets.’ — New Jersey Animal Rights Alliance, “Should Dogs Be Kept As Pets? NO!” Good Dog! February 1991, p.20.

I don’t use the word “pet.” I think it’s speciesist language. I prefer “companion animal.” For one thing, we would no longer allow breeding. People could not create different breeds. There would be no pet shops. If people had companion animals in their homes, those animals would have to be refugees from the animal shelters and the streets. You would have a protective relationship with them just as you would with an orphaned child. But as the surplus of cats and dogs (artificially engineered by centuries of forced breeding) declined, eventually companion animals would be phased out, and we would return to a more symbiotic relationship – enjoyment at a distance — Ingrid Newkirk, PETA’s President, quoted in The Harper’s Forum Book, Jack Hitt, ed., 1989, p.223.

We have no ethical obligation to preserve the different breeds of livestock produced through selective breeding. …One generation and out. We have no problems with the extinction of domestic animals. They are creations of human selective breeding — Wayne Pacelle – Former National Director of Fund for Animals.

How dare we, as pet owners, lobbyists, and politicians bow down to these words!  Humans and animals have had a mutually compatible relationship for eons.  In the process of human history, we have selected animals for traits that were beneficial to us.  The elkhound helped the Vikings hunt moose – thus staving off hunger for humans.  The shepherding dogs tended our livestock against wolves – thus staving off hunger for humans.  The arctic dogs provided transportation in desolate areas of the world – thus staving off hunger for humans.  Every breed of dog has been bred for a purpose.  The haughty arrogance of the Animal Rights movement fails to acknowledge that our various species – including domesticated livestock – are a part of human history – a history that should and MUST be preserved.  Conscientious breeders are truly historians, preserving a part of our human history.  In the process, they also produce companion animals who love and adore them, and are loved back.

I hope every pet owner, breeder, lobbyist, and politician will realize that the Animal Rights movement means just that….ANIMAL RIGHTS MEANS NO ANIMALS LEFT.

WHY are we losing our Dog Culture to anti-dog entities?

Posted in Animal Activists, Animal Ownership, Guardians? Or Owners?, On the National Front, Pet Laws, Pet Owner Bill of Rights, What is HSUS?, What is a puppy mill? at 1:05 am by Administrator

The United States was founded under the assumption of liberty and the pursuit of happiness for all.  To that extent, we are a multicultural country.  We have racial cultures, we have religious cultures, we have sports cultures, we have work cultures.  We tend to be accepting of other cultures.  One neighbor can be a sports fan and a Lutheran, another a jazz fan and a Catholic – but they still manage to be neighbors and to accept one another’s cultures.

The culture of the dog hobbyist/fancier is not so lucky.  The powerful, rich, and mighty Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) have decided that our culture – our very lifestyle – is unacceptable.

In 2009, over 140 pieces of anti-dog and anti-breeder legislation were introduced in 37 states.  The language in all of these bills was remarkably similar.  It isn’t by coincidence!  It’s the huge, deep, lobbying pockets of HSUS and its ilk.

Wayne Pacelle, CEO and President of HSUS, has indicated that he has no problem with eliminating domestic animals:  “One generation and out. We have no problems with the extinction of domestic animals. They are creations of human selective breeding” (Animal People News, May 1993).  HSUS has over $130 million in annual revenue and assets of more than $200 million.  Yet less than ½ of one percent of donations goes directly to the hands-on care of animals.  Most of the rest of that cash, hard-earned by its donors, goes to six-figure payrolls for staffers, salaries for “social media” personnel who are paid to respond to any and all comments about H$U$, and massive lobbying efforts.  In fact, the IRS has been tasked with investigating the 501c3 status of the HSUS based on the tremendous amount of lobbying it performs.  Wayne Pacelle is an attorney.  He is not an animal husbandry expert.  He does not even have a pet.

Ingrid Newkirk, President of PETA, has said“I don’t use the word ‘pet.’ I think it’s speciesist language. I prefer ‘companion animal.’ For one thing, we would no longer allow breeding. People could not create different breeds. There would be no pet shops. If people had companion animals in their homes, those animals would have to be refugees from the animal shelters and the streets. You would have a protective relationship with them just as you would with an orphaned child. But as the surplus of cats and dogs (artificially engineered by centuries of forced breeding) declined, eventually companion animals would be phased out, and we would return to a more symbiotic relationship – enjoyment at a distance.  Ms. Newkirk advocates militant action and has been arrested more than 20 times.  She is an ardent supporter of the Animal Liberation Front, which is listed by the FBI as a terrorist group.

Who are these people to force their anti-animal, vegan culture on us?  Why are we letting this one culture, the culture of those who believe animals should have the same rights as humans, legislate what we do or do not do with the dogs (and other animals) that we own?  How can we let them dictate our breeding practices?  These two leaders, and most of the staff of their organizations, have no experience in animal husbandry or welfare.  Yet they have infiltrated the nation through legislation, the media, and yes, even our grade schools, convincing the public that they have the expertise to determine how many dogs a person should own and who should own them and when to breed them.

None of us likes puppy factories.  We know they exist.  Yet there are already very adequate animal welfare laws and regulations in place in every state.  And while there have been instances in which inspectors have dropped the ball, there is no doubt that the laws do exist – and adding another layer of bureaucracy certainly will do nothing to improve the manpower shortage that caused the inspectors to drop the ball!  It would be much more practical and economical to simply consistently enforce the already existing animal welfare laws.

All of us believe in animal welfare.  We provide food, water, shelter, veterinary care, and love to our animals.  But do they really have rights?  Having rights also entails having responsibilities.  Taking responsibility involves having morals.  Humans have the right to go shopping but we do not have the right to steal while doing so.  Dogs don’t have that morality.  If it’s there, and it’s edible, they’ll try to steal it.  Dogs understand “safe” and “dangerous” – it may be “safe” to lay on the rug and drool while Mom is cooking, but it’s “dangerous” to try to steal food off the table – but there is no morality about it.  Dogs don’t have an understanding of incest.  Dogs don’t go to the ballot box and vote.  Humans do.

Alas, our counterculture cannot and will not leave us alone.  Sporting badges that look remarkably like police badges, HSUS staff takes part in “raids” on dog owners and breeders.  Raids!  The very word evokes visions of war.  Pirates raid ships.  Armies raid other countries.  The word “raid” invokes a level of criminality to those being raided – even if no charges are filed.

There have been well-publicized cases in which reputable breeders have been “raided” and no findings were made, or charges against them were dropped – yet their dogs were seized and in many cases, adopted out, sterilized, or euthanized before the courts had a chance to make their findings.  In one case, not only were the dogs confiscated, but so were the owner’s show win photos, title certificates, ribbons, and other mementos.  They were not returned.

This is a war.  The HSUS and PETA culture have been gathering steam for years, while our culture – the dog culture – has stood by with our collective heads in the sand.  We have accepted the term “puppy mill” to encompass anyone who breeds more than a litter a year.  Shame on us.  We are supposed to be the experts on breeding.  How does one gain expertise if we bow down to the anti-animal culture that says breeding dogs is bad?  Why have we allowed this anti-animal culture to grow to its current, tremendously frightening level?

Most people would not dream of forcing a vegan to eat meat.  If a religious cult of any type began lobbying in the same manner as HSUS and PETA, attempting to force its culture down the throats of Americans, the hue and cry raised by citizens would be deafening.

It’s time we stood up to the anti-animal culture.  It’s time every one of us, whether owner, breeder, or exhibitor, took part in the legislative process that threatens to overrun our very culture.

If you don’t like Fords, buy a Chevy.  If you don’t like meat, don’t eat it.  If you don’t like dogs, don’t go to a dog show.  But leave me and my dogs alone.

Diana Culp

It’s happened again. My previous employment with a particular company has brought challenges for me both in my personal life and at work. I was the Director of Education for HSUS from 2006-2009. My lifelong work with animals brings me into contact with people from all walks of life. HSUS, the Humane Society of the United States, has decidedly become a formidable Animal Rights Lobby and that is reason for concern, and the reason I resigned.

In general, lobbyists are well funded extremists who fight for their issue regardless of the arguments on the other side. The way our system works, it is expected that the “other side” has just as strong support and the battle will balance the issue to the will of the people. That is not how this is working out. The other side of this issue is neither well funded nor well informed. Dog breeders are not always aware that they are under attack and pet owners have no idea that animal rights may take away their right to have a cat as a companion or eat an egg.

First, I must acknowledge that animal rights advocates come in all denominations. There are people who use no animal products in food or products including silk and wool, and who eschew the ownership of pets of all kinds. Any use of an animal is a moral issue for them. There are others who keep companion animals they would defend to the death and mainly strive  to end animal cruelty by harshly punishing humans for the wrong they have done. No excuses.

How has this caused me conflict? Working in law enforcement I was confronted with questions about the tactics of activists who disregard the law with an ends justifies the means mentality. In my personal life, my affinity for working animals puts me at odds with misinformed animal lovers who believe that 4 million pets are killed annually in shelters and this is caused by dog breeding.

I am not a breeder, although I have a purebred dog as well as a mixed breed. I have trained dogs to do things I want them to do that they wouldn’t do of their own accord, like come when I call. Heavens, I even have a parrot who actually lives in a cage for her own safety. I do wildlife rehabilitation under a proper state permit. All of these things have become increasingly  controversial because of lobbying and misinformation.

This is an important issue because all good people defend the “right” of an animal to live a life as free from suffering as possible, and this should include humans. This is NOT what Animal Rights is about. This is Animal Welfare, which does include actual welfare programs such as shelters for homeless pets. What to do wtih the unwanted pets is at the crux of the conflict.

Animal Welfare supporters would like to see them all saved, even if that empties the public coffers with consideration for people in need. Animal Rights advocates support mandatory neutering for domesticated animals that humans have allegedly created until there are no more.

If we truly want to respect animals (human and non human) then we would respect the choice to join forces as companions and work mates. Believing that humans engineered the dog, for example, is the epitome of arrogance. And the animal rights argument that follows, to end their existence, is the epitome of disregard for what nature has taken eons to perfect.

Nebraska Restrictive Dog Breeding Bill Scheduled for Hearing

[January 26, 2011]

The Nebraska Agriculture Committee is scheduled to consider Legislative Bill 427 on February 8.

Legislative Bill 427 seeks to further regulate “commercial dog breeders” in Nebraska.  Current law defines “commercial breeders” as anyone “engaged in the business of breeding dogs” and owns or harbors four or more intact dogs or cats, sells at least 31 dogs and cats per year, owns dogs/cats that produce four or more litters per year, or who knowingly sells or leases dogs/cats for later retail sale or brokered trade.

With this low threshold in current law, LB 427 would require anyone who owns four intact dogs of any age to comply with strict engineering standards and breeder restrictions.  View the AKC’s previous Legislative Alert on LB 427 for more information on this legislation.

HELP SPAY AND NEUTER HSUS

Posted in Animal Activists, Animal Ownership, Mandatory Spay/Neuter, On the National Front, What is HSUS? at 10:54 pm by Administrator

IN CASE YOU MISSED THIS, FORGOT or just “didn’t have time” at Thanksgiving, Frank Losey is asking for our help once again.  Frank’s strategically-planned campaign, “How To Spay/Neuter the HSUS”, continues to be a huge success, because of YOU!

But, it is imperative that everybody send the letters, make the calls, etc, when he asks, so that each step of the way is completed before the next step is to go forward.  PLEASE do this, do it again if you want to, forward to your clubs, friends, relatives, lists, Facebook, Twitter, etc.  There is no such thing as “too many” when it comes to getting government attention from citizens.

The methods given below are easier now than they have ever been!

(and, nobody’s asking for money!!!  Just a few short minutes of your time)

Flood the OIG Office with thousands of e-mails, faxes, letters and phone calls.  A “flood” of requests will be compelling and will further show the OIG that tax-paying citizens are concerned and are requesting immediate action by the IRS to hold the HSUS accountable to the U.S. Tax Code.

  • OIG E-MAIL ADDRESS:  Complaints@tigta.treas.gov (Subject:  OIG Case File 55-1005-0025-C)
  • OIG FAX:  202-927-7018
  • OIG HOTLINE PHONE: 1-800-366-4484 (may be anonymous if you choose)
  • OIG MAILING ADDRESS: Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration, HOTLINE, P.O. Box 589, Ben Franklin Station, Washington DC 20044-0589

The message to the OIG may be as simple as: “I am writing (calling) about your Case File Number 55-1005-0025-C; and the IRS Tax Fraud Case File Number 29-92012.  Would you please direct that the IRS expedite its on-going investigation of the excessive lobbying activities of the Humane Society of the U.S. and its potential failure to report over $500 Million in revenue on its tax returns, all of which have been substantiated by over 1,400 pages of documents that the IRS has received.   The IRS investigation is now over 2 years old, and should not be allowed to drag on any longer.”

So that I may keep a running count of the total number who have contacted the OIG:

  • If you send an e-mail, Blind-Copy Frank on your e-mail (f.losey@insightbb.com).
  • If you fax or call, just shoot me an email with subject line “Fax’d/Called OIG.”
  • Or mail a confirmation to Frank Losey, 2029 Tampa Blvd., Navarre, FL 32566).  Thank You!

We’ve Been Sacked by the Humane Society

Posted in Animal Activists, Animal Ownership, Pet Laws, What is HSUS? at 2:39 pm by Administrator

We’ve Been Sacked by the Humane Society

by Joe ‘The Plumber’ Wurzelbacher

While Americans across the country have entered the political game to save our country, moving that proverbial ball of freedom towards the end zone, we’ve been sacked. Blindsided. We’ve been so focused on legislative elections (and rightly so) that most Americans don’t even know they’ve been hit – and hit hard.

But not by some big, burly monster like voter fraud or corruption. No, we’ve been knocked flat by the ignorance of the conservative electorate and cute little puppies licking our stunned, what-the-heck-just-happened faces.

Well, I’ll tell you what just happened.

It’s called the Humane Society of the United States cowardly hiding behind animal cruelty, lying to our citizens and taking our constitutional rights away – one state at a time.

This radical animal rights organization (HSUS), who spends less than 0.5% of its $100M + budget on actually helping animals, is using the referendum process to slowly, systematically eliminate food production in the United States.

In California, HSUS has decimated the egg industry forcing chicken farmers out of business and consumers to buy imported eggs. In Florida, for all intents and purposes, HSUS eliminated the pork industry. (Wondering why pork prices are going sky high?) They’ve also crippled numerous other agribusinesses – dragging connected industries down with them.

This November, HSUS is after the dog breeding industry in Missouri calling the bill the “Puppy Cruelty Prevention Act”. Great name. I mean who wouldn’t want to keep someone from being cruel to a puppy? The problem is Missouri already HAS laws protecting animals – all animals. So what’s the real agenda?

Simply to get rid of ALL dog breeding in Missouri – the unlicensed AND licensed breeders. Missouri’s Proposition B makes it a “crime of cruelty” for a piece of dog food to be in a water bowl or for a dog breeder to treat their own pet if they become ill (even with something as simple as a cold). To add insult to injury, HSUS has exempted themselves and shelters from these same laws. Apparently, they’re allowed to be cruel, but no one else is. (No folks, I don’t make this stuff up.)

This would almost be comical if it weren’t for the OTHER, more insidious parts of this bill that hit at the very core of our liberties. This bill forces breeders to limit the number of dogs they can own – regardless of care. Think about this a minute . . . . Should the government have the right to limit the number of houses a realtor can sell? Or the number of cattle a rancher can raise?

These new regulations will put almost every breeder in Missouri out of business forcing the price of dogs to sky rocket and allowing pet ownership only for the very wealthy. But this bill is just a stepping stone. HSUS eventually wants to extend this law to ALL animals. Their idea of utopia is a United States with NO animal ownership; NO meat to eat; NO pets; NO hunting; NO fishing; NO service animals. If chicken farmers would be forced to own no more than 50 chickens they could no longer afford to stay in business. The same will hold true with hog farmers and cattle ranchers. Eventually, agri-business will be forced to go over seas, just as our manufacturing and tech industries.

But even the extinction of our food industry isn’t the scariest part of this whacko liberal agenda. A law is only as good as it’s enforced. And HSUS is happy to fill the void. HSUS has now become the self-appointed law enforcement of the animal world. In some states, HSUS employees are running around with guns and police-like badges breaking down doors, confiscating animals and business papers, and obtaining warrants with false information. Lawsuits are cropping up against HSUS, sheriffs and governments for blatant violations of the most basic of constitutional rights.

Enough is enough. We have to draw the line and hold these radical animal rights activists back. The battle this year is in Missouri. If we do not all enlist and soundly defeat this deceptive bill, you can expect your state to be next.

HSUS – The Rest of the Story (by Frank Losey)

Posted in What is HSUS? at 1:54 pm by Administrator

TO BE CROSSPOSTED

F.LOSEY

“AND NOW THE REST OF THE STORY” ABOUT THE HUMANE SOCIETY OF THE U.S.”

DID YOU KNOW THAT . . . . .

1.         The Humane Society of the U.S. (HSUS) spends more money on its lobbying activities and for hosting Receptions at the U.S. Capitol and State Capitols than it does on direct animal care.

2.         The Humane Society of the U.S. (HSUS) spends more money on Receptions and Award Dinners in Hollywood and Washington DC for entertainers and celebrities than it does in direct financial support of animal shelters for dogs and cats.

3.         The Humane Society of the U.S. (HSUS) acknowledges on its website that the HSUS does not operate a single animal shelter for dogs and cats anywhere in the U.S., and it has never reported how much, if any, of the One Billion Dollars of Revenue that it has received in the last 10 years was used in support of animal shelters for dogs and cats in the U.S.

4.         Although the Missouri Ethics Commission has reported on its Website that the HSUS has contributed over $1.2 Million for the lobbying activities related to the Proposition B Ballot Initiative, there is no known record of the Humane Society of the U.S. contributing a single dime in support of any animal shelter for dogs and cats in Missouri.

5.         Although the required Lobbying Reports that the Humane Society of the U.S. (HSUS) has filed with the States of California and Ohio document that the HSUS contributed $5,830,728.76 in support of Ballot Initiatives in those two States, the HSUS has never told the public how much, if any, of the more than $200 Million Dollars of Revenue that it has received in the last two years was used in support of animal shelters for dogs and cats in either California or Ohio.

6.         The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is auditing the lobbying activities of the Humane
Society of the U.S. to determine if it has exceeded the IRS limitation of “TOO MUCH LOBBYING” by a tax-exempt, public charity. (IRS CASE FILE NUMBERS:  29-92012 & 55-1005-0025-C)

7.         The Humane Society (HSUS) of the U.S. may have made misrepresentations on its Tax Returns because the HSUS had denied each year on its Tax Returns that any of its Volunteers and Paid Staff had “lobbied” until after the IRS assigned CASE FILE NUMBER 29-92012 to an IRS Investigation File in December of 2008.

8.         If the IRS determines that the Humane Society of the U.S. (HSUS) has engaged in “TOO MUCH LOBBYING,” the IRS may rescind its tax-exempt, public charity status and assess back taxes and penalties against the Humane Society of the U.S. that could total in excess of $100 Million.

9.         The Humane Society of the U.S. (HSUS) may not be in compliance with the Lobbying Disclosure Act (2 U.S.C. 1601-1607), a Federal Statute.  In this regard,  despite the fact that the HSUS reports on its Tax Returns that it lobbies the U.S. Congress, the registration records maintained on the websites of the Clerk of the U.S. House and the Secretary of the U.S. Senate, who are responsible for maintaining lobbying registrations required by the Lobbying Disclosure Act, reveal the words “no matching filings found” when a search request is submitted for the following:

  • · The Humane Society of the U.S. (HSUS)
  • · Wayne Pacelle (President and CEO of the HSUS)
  • · Michael Markarian (Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the HSUS)
  • · Nancy Perry (Vice President of Government Affairs whose BIO on the HSUS Website explicitly references her oversight responsibilities for the lobbying activities of the HSUS)
  • · The Humane Society Legislative Fund (The Lobbying Affiliate of the HSUS, whose President is the same Michael Markarian who is the COO of the HSUS)

10.       If the Humane Society of the U.S. is not in compliance with the Lobbying Disclosure Act, it could be subject to a civil fine of up to $200,000.

11.       The Humane Society of the U.S. has prepared and distributed a “Humane Action Guide for Kids,” who are as young as 5-years old. This Guide potentially exploits children by including a detailed section that encourages 5-12 year-old children to contact Elected Representative and further gives them detailed instructions as to how to be an effective lobbyist.

12.       The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is auditing the lobbying activities of the Humane

15.       By letter dated January 18, 2008, the President and CEO of the Humane Society of the U.S. suggested that the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act is an “unjust” law, and that it is appropriate for acts of “civil disobedience . . . to draw attention to unjust laws.”

16.       In an E-Mail dated November 16, 2009, the President and CEO of the HSUS stated that every “responsible breeder” is a “puppy miller;” every “family farmer” is “factory farmer;” and every “responsible hunter” is a “poacher.”

18.       Commercial Pet Breeder Associations in the 10 States where over 85% of all Federally licensed and inspected breeders are located have now publicly condemned substandard kennels.

19.       Despite repeated written requests asking that the Humane Society of the U.S. (HSUS) acknowledge the public condemnations by responsible breeders, the HSUS has never acknowledge the condemnations by responsible breeders who truly care about the health and well being of their dogs, and especially the puppies that bring so much love and joy into the homes of millions of appreciative dog owners.

20.       The Humane Society of the U.S. and its Chief Attorney were named as defendants in a lawsuit that was filed in the District Court of Washington DC on February 16, 2010.            The lawsuit was filed by the parent company of Ringling Brothers, and the lawsuit alleges that the Humane Society of the U.S. and its Chief Attorney, Jonathan R. Lovvorn, engaged in “malicious prosecution,” and conspired to violate the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (“RICO”) 18 U.S. C. 1961. The allegations in this lawsuit also raise the issue of “money laundering” by the HSUS.
